Dominica Carib Heritage
Where to Stay in the Historic Village of the Carib People
For many years of its early history the Caribs ruled Dominica.
see travelers history
They defeated the Arawak indians and routed both the French and English on many occasion. So much so that both the British and French Ceeded the land back to the Caribs. That was until the French finally realised how strategic Dominica was and took it back.
The British took Dominica again and the Caribs were largly ignored as a culture. Today the Dominica Carib Village is being restored - Their are a few indigenous guest house / hotels. Life in the village resolves around core families, fishing, crafts and cultural events.
The Village is a 3,700 acre Territory on Dominica's east coast set aside for them in 1903. They number approximately 3,000 and elect their own chief who holds the position for 4 years.
